Dornier, pioneer in the application of the digital map in mission planning and command/control systems, introduces its latest member of the GeoGrid digital map family: the DKG 3 Moving Map Kneeboard. It is the affordable and reliable companion of the professional pilot either operating a helicopter or a fixed wing aircraft. With its large full colour flight route and map display it provides many of the features previously unknown to systems of this class and available only in systems of much higher cost. Worldwide map coverage is provided using international available map data sources. In flight the map movement is controlled via the aircraft's navigation system or an optional GPS receiver. Via its optional communication interface it can serve as terminal in C3I systems. (Also available as cockpit integrated version: DKG 4)
System Operation
With the two modes of operation - Planning and Navigation - the system provides all functions the operator needs to plan his mission before takeoff and to monitor his navigation situation during flight.
Display and Control Unit
In the basic configuration the Kneeboard Display and Control Unit is a fully operational stand alone equipment which is linked via an interface cable to the navigation system and to the power supply. It can either be attached to the operator's left or right thigh. With its dimmable screen it presents a clear full colour picture of the total navigation situation under all brightness conditions including use of night vision goggles. A glare shield and NVG filterglass are available to enhance the display readability. System operation is quite simple, using menue control and a minimum of control elements:

Interface Unit
The optional Interface Unit provides additional capability to the basic Kneeboard Display and Control Unit. It houses boards for a variety of options including:
Ground Support Station The ground support station provides extended mission planning features taking advantage of the company experience in military mission planning. In addition to the on-board features it offers range and fuel calculations, flight log printouts, production and update of obstacle and AIS libraries, and mission replay for mission debriefing.
It also performs map preparation functions, including reading of the map source data from CDROM or any other state-of-the-art data carrier, converting the rnap data for the selected area to the GeoGrid data format, and transferring the data to the map data carrier.
